He was Private 45313, in the 7th Bn., South Staffordshire Regiment, when he was killed in action, probably at the third battle of Ypres.
James died on 4 Oct 1917, in Flanders, Belgium, and was buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, Zonnebeke, Belgium
